Spending money you don’t have on any sort of luxury feels wrong on so many levels. How can you be willing to buy that expensive foundation, pricey bracelet, or costly gym membership when your fridge is bare and your bank account dwindling? Gym memberships shouldn’t be part of the “luxury item” list, but with today’s exorbitant prices, it’s a wonder anyone can afford going to the gym at all.

Improve Your Fitness Regimen

August 2, 2016 / no comments

Most of us would probably like to be fitter than we currently are. Maybe your fitness journey has consisted of getting discouraged along the way and falling into lazy habits. Or maybe additional responsibilities at work or at home have left you with little time or energy to exercise. But no matter what your experiences have been, how old you are, or how fit you feel; it is never too late to make a change and get into shape. One great way to do that is to join a fun dance exercise class that will help you transform your body as well as make friends all at the same time.

Let’s check out some simple steps you can take to improve (or start) your fitness regimen with Bombay Jam’s infectious one-hour cardio routine!

Know Your Goals

It’s hard to develop and stick to a fitness routine if you don’t know what your personal goals are. It’s important to spend some time figuring out in which areas you specifically would like to improve. We all have unique needs, so following someone else’s goals is sure to lead you astray. If you would like to add bulk in the form of muscle mass, then it is probably a good idea to spend time in the weight room. If you want to keep those muscles lean and sculpted, then our action-packed class should be right up your alley.

Eating (Breakfast) Matters

It’s easy to forget that diet is a vital factor in health—almost as much as exercise is. If you’re not consuming the right kinds of foods, your body will not be able to manufacture the nutrients needed to build muscle, expend energy, and continue burning fat throughout the day (even after your workout).

It all starts with breakfast. If you’re taking a Bombay Jam dance fitness class in the morning, it’s best to eat at least an hour prior to working out. Whole grain foods are the best things to include in your first meal of the day. Peanut butter with banana is a good combo as well as low-fat yogurt with berries. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, you can opt for a protein packed green smoothie in place of your early morning meal.

What is Bombay Jam?

August 2, 2016 / no comments

If you’re new to Bombay Jam, then here are a few things you should know: it’s an addictive, effective, and highly entertaining way to get in shape! Bombay Jam is a dance fitness (or “dancercise,” as known to some) class that centers around Bollywood music and dance. Our music tracks are custom blends of catchy Indian tunes with Top 40 hits and our choreography is a fusion of Bollywood, hip hop, Bhangra, jazz, Latin, and more.

We started Bombay Jam in 2009 with the vision of using the eclectic Indian film industry in order to devise a fun, yet intense, dance fitness class. Our program has passed review by Master Trainers and is nationally certified through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), the largest fitness and TeleFitness educator in the world. Simply put, Bombay Jam is a lively, energetic workout program that centers around the high energy Bollywood culture.

Who We Are

We’re passionate choreographers, Bollywood dancers, and nationally certified instructors with years of experience in the industry. But most of all, we’re authentic. Our core team of instructors grew up in the heart of Bollywood — Mumbai, India — steeped in the rich and extensive traditions of the globally recognized Indian film industry. We’re a friendly, motivating bunch who understands that a great workout combines equal parts of enjoyment, safety, and effectiveness!

What’s Bombay Jam?

We kick your workout into high drive by infusing a genuine Bollywood flavor into them.  Our music tracks are custom made by some of India’s most talented DJs. Our routines are choreographed to burn calories, build strength, tone muscles, and enhance flexibility.

Check out what makes up a Bombay Jam session:

  1. Class starts with a brief warm-up to get your muscles and your attitude ready to jam.
  2. Then we transition to about 25 minutes of cardio to bring up the heart rate and challenge the cardiovascular system. We have a pattern in place to bring the heart rate up and back down in a healthy manner. It’s all about the heart muscle here!
  3. Now we tone. We target three major muscle groups in each class: 1) arms and shoulders, 2) legs, and 3) abs and back. You use your own body weight and resistance for the toning routines. No external weights or props are required for our program. You’ll be surprised how heavy your arms and legs will feel after this part of the class!
  4. We wind down each class with a stretching routine to bring everyone back to a resting heart rate. The sweat will really start pouring here.

Why You’ll Love It

By the end of our one-hour dance fitness class, you will have gotten a full body workout and have burned up to 800 calories. Not only that, but you will have accomplished all of that without even realizing it! Most of our students report that the hour goes by so quickly because the class is so enjoyable. And in addition to that, our friendly studio environment and in-class camaraderie helps get people excited about working out—even those who have struggled with finding the motivation to do so in the past.

One of our veteran fitness instructors and program content creators, Janani Chalaka, said it best:

“Everyone knows fitness is important. They understand it up in their head, but they don’t always feel it in their heart and soul. Nobody wants to run on a treadmill endlessly. So while people know that fitness is important, it’s easy to fall off the wagon sometimes. So we at Bombay Jam asked ourselves—what can we do to motivate people and inspire them to work out?”

And so was the conception of Bombay Jam — a place where both beginners and seasoned trainers alike can benefit from the same workout and companionship as well as gain flexibility, strength, and stamina.

Some people might be taken back to junior high, where at a Hollywood-themed party they had their first slow dance, others might go the pop culture route, remembering Elaine Benes’ famous party jig. At Bombay Jam, when we hear the word dance we think of the colorful, bright sets of Bollywood films, and the many vibrant garments swaying enthusiastically to infectious music.

Inspired by this play between music and movement, Bombay Jam was born into a dance exercise class that offers participants an immersive, exciting experience. Dancing is more than frolicking about, it’s self-expression in its truest form. Continue Reading…

My Weight Loss Journey – A Personal Story by Mohini Bogineni

November 11, 2015 / no comments

I am a mother, a working professional and a wife yet the biggest challenge I have ever faced was trying to lose weight. Like many women my age, I had struggled with being overweight most of my adult life, through two pregnancies and post-pregnancies.

I tried several fitness centers but often it felt I had to get into shape just to enter the gym. Getting myself in the door was hard enough, but once there, I found most group-fitness instructors to be cold and impersonal. Working out on my own was extremely boring. Over the years, I have tried Taebo, Total Gym, Bow Flex, Pilates and the list goes on. Nothing stuck.

Then I discovered Bombay Jam. Bombay Jam is a unique total body workout that is set against the backdrop of the latest Bollywood music/remixes. It is absolutely fun and allows me to forget that I am in a gym working out- it feels more like I am out dancing. The instructors are absolutely wonderful and I enjoy it so much that even after being at it for several years, I still look forward to
my one hour of power packed fun every day.

Discovering a work out that suited my needs led to victory after victory. I lost over 70 pounds in 12 months. I lost all that weight the all-natural way – by working out and eating right. More importantly, I have kept it off for – you heard it right! I went from size 14 to size 0. I have cut my risk for diabetes and heart disease considerably, which are very prevalent in the South Asian diaspora. Best of all, Bombay Jam allows me to have all the energy I needBefore After to keep up with my little ones and work full-time.

Because Bombay Jam continues to innovate and develop their program, I am able to continue my weight loss journey without losing interest. They create new content every quarter which means my body does not get used to any one set of movements (which can make a workout ineffectual after a while).

My transformation would not have been possible without Bombay Jam. I’ve learned that it is really important to find a workout regimen that works for you and that you can stay committed to in order to find weight loss success. I am not going to say the old cliché – If I can do it anyone can do it but I am sure I can’t be the only one who loves to dance and wants to get to a healthy weight. All I am going to say is you owe it to yourself to give Bombay Jam a shot.
